So who am I and why can I preach so much about interviews. My name is Sean Connolly. For some reason I had a certain quality for producing outstanding interviews. This lead to great success in them and I ended up landing jobs way above my skill set, aptitude or even beliefs at the time. As a fresh faced graduate out of college I beat off over 200 experienced managers, to land a management job for a leading retailer. I sat in the waiting lounge with people with 20 years experience in retail management and here was me with none. Now it was not experience, good looks or charm that enabled me to land that job …. it was the ability to interview well. I then jetted off to travel and on my return I was eager to find work. Low and behold I walked into a management role paying more money than I was previously on, with better hours and best of all …. no interview. Now that is a whole separate skill. Six months into that an amazing opportunity came up for career progression, in a job that I had no hope of getting - or so I thought. These jobs in my local area and are few and far between and when they do arise competition is fierce. This time it was for a management position in a well known banking institution. Now bear in mind I was 22, no banking experience, I did not even know the difference between and credit and a debit card. Guess what the secret to my success was ….. you guessed it … my interview.
Now how did I get so good at interviews. Was it some strange unique ability, did I lie in interviews, had I strange special peruasion skill or even magic powers. I wish!!! What enabled me to get so good at interviews was two fold.
1) I have a ferocious appetite to learn particularly around career development tools.
2) I went to that many interviews and failed so miserably that many times prior to this that I learned clearly what works and what does not.
I clearly knew what works and what does not. As a trained and qualified coach I began coaching and training people on how they too can interview with total success. I have clients from the UK, Ireland and even Africa. I ran a voluntary coaching program to help someone land their dream career in 6 weeks. They landed it in 4!!! I have coached people in a wide range of industries from catering to TV presenting to Social Care to Management. One recent client I coached had to pit against 100’s of applicants for a job in a coffee shop. The joys of the recession, 100s in for a job in a coffee shop. Did she get it? Of course she did!!! Not only was she that well briefed in job interviews that she landed that job, they even offered her a management position at the same interview. Again was it skills, abilities, talents that enabled her success …. no …. it was using time test principles for interview success.
